5th Grade UIL Events
Tryouts, meetings, and practices may be scheduled before or after school to
accommodate students who wish to participate in more than one event. Your child may
try out for any event they are interested in. Sign-up sheets will be available. Once teams
are chosen, coaches will send specific event information. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
Number Sense - Guidry-Hawthorn
Students are expected to compute math problems mentally. Number Sense tryouts
will be held _Sept. 19 - 23 from 7:30 to 8:00 am. For students selected to participate in
Math, practices will be held on Mondays - 4:00 to 4:45 pm.
Spelling – Cossey
Words are called out and the student spells the word neatly and correctly. Spelling
tryouts will be held Sept. 26-29 from 7:30am-8:00am daily. For students selected to
participate in Spelling, practices will be held on 7:30am-8:00am Mon. & Wed.
Oral Reading - Vance
Students will read a selection with expression. Try-outs will be held September 26-
29 from 7:30am-8:00am daily. For students selected to participate in Oral Reading,
practices will be held 7:30am-8:00am Tues. & Thur.
Ready Writing – Maggio
Students will be given a prompt and write an essay. Try-outs will be held Sept. 26-
29 from 7:30am-8:00am daily. For students selected to participate in Ready Writing,
practices will be held 7:30am-8:00am Mon. & Wed.
Music Memory - Moore
Students will listen to selected music and must be able to know the name of the
selection and the composer. Try-outs will be held Oct 3,4 & 5 at 7:30 am. For students
selected to participate in Music Memory, practices will be held 7:30am-8:00am Tues &
Thurs.
Chess – Guidry-Hawthorn
Students will look at a picture of chess and be asked multiple choice questions
about moves, strategies, and terms. Try-outs will be held Sept. 19 - 23 from 7:30 to 8:00
am. Practices will be Mondays 4:00 to 4:45 pm.
Art – McDonald
Students will study selected works of art and should be able to spell the name of
the art and the artist correctly. Try-outs will be held next week on Tuesday, September 20
and Thursday, September 22 at 7:30 in the Art classroom.
Dictionary Skills – Maggio
Students will answer questions using dictionaries. Try-outs will be Sept. 26-29
_7:30am-8:00am daily. Practices will be at 7:30am-8:00am Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Listening – Vance
Students will listen to a script lasting between 7 and 10 minutes, take notes as
needed, and use their notes to answer 25 questions about the selection. Try-outs will be
Oct. 4-6, 7:30am-8:00am daily. Practices will be 7:30am-8:00am Mondays and
Wednesdays.
Maps, Graphs & Charts – Lee
Students will answer questions using an atlas. Try-outs will be any morning before
school at 7:30 from September 19th - October 14th. Practices will be Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 7:30-8:15–students should take at least one
test per week.
Social Studies – Lee
Students will answer questions based on information students will study about US,
World, and state information. Try-outs will be any morning before school at 7:30 from
September 19th through October 14th. Practices will be Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday mornings from 7:30-8:15–students should take at least one test per week.
